This is a world divided by blood – red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Hmmm, I’m trying to find the right words to describe this book without sounding like an absolute meanie. Red Queen turned out to be the disappointment book of 2017 for me. And I blame the hype for my exceedingly high expectations. People were gushing about it left and right so of course, I jumped on the wagon! and wow… what. a. letdown.

It started out so well but kept going downhill before it even got to the middle. The writing was one of the things that absolutely ruined it for me. It was cheesy and utterly predictable, in fact, it was from the writing that I predicted every single “twist” coming. I mean, I SAW everything coming from miles away. I don’t want to give away anything so I won’t go into detail about that.

The second factor was…The narrator/heroine Mare. Oh, where do I begin.? I was very irritated with her because I expected so much from her. Was I wrong in assuming that she was supposed to be this clever, badass kind of girl who just turned out to be.. an idiot? Cause some of the decisions she was making – I was like, seriously? no, come on!

On a much brighter note though, that cover… I mean come on! let’s give credit where credit is due here! 🙌 It may be the only redeeming quality about the book but it IS redeeming nonetheless (to a certain extent. let’s not get crazy here 😜). So yes, may not be a popular opinion given the hype but it IS my opinion. All that I can say to people who are planning on reading this is, to just forget the hype and go into it without reading reviews, if possible.
